INTRODUCING MUSIMUTRA
Histories in sound
Musimutra emerged as a brand for a project that has a big name: "Mapping the music of invention made by women and trans people in Brazil" .
The idea is to do just that: research, map, put everything together on a website, publish and compile music, play it for the world, build a network. Create a channel of visibility and listening for artists who are so often relegated to the territory of invisibility and silencing.
BUT WHAT IS INVENTION MUSIC?
Well, it could be so many things, right? Our understanding here seeks to be broad and inclusive: it could be a solo project that uses obsolete electronics to make extreme music, or it could be a group that uses regional acoustic instruments to create unexpected improvisations.
What matters is that they are musical proposals that are difficult to define, which stand out more for their poorly defined and unusual practices than for their frameworks and formulas.
This is a project in which, both in aesthetics and politics, we are interested in what is different, divergent, in what invents, transforms, in what opens the way and sustains itself as an unlikely and singular piece.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE
The project covers women in general, transmasculine people, transfeminine people, and the entire non-binary spectrum, who make music as described above. Attention will also be paid to markers such as class, race/ethnicity, peripheral origin, neuroatypia and belonging to the LGBTQIAPN+ spectrum, for example.
AND WHAT IS GOING TO RESULT OF THIS?
We want to increase the visibility and listening of these people, as creative agents, once again highlighting their value and uniqueness.
One of the "justifications" that we still hear from hiring managers in the cultural world is that "there are no women/trans people" doing something new or the sound they are interested in hiring, in an erroneous discourse that perpetuates inequality.
A mapping available online allows for greater visibility and possibilities for recognition and can instigate and infect other women and trans people to learn about these works and, who knows, start their own musical projects.
In addition, we will also offer online workshops, write articles… and, who knows, something else? The project will be developed throughout 2024 and launched in the last two months.
Do you want to meet more people and more music like you, different, intriguing and inventive?
If you are a woman, trans or non-binary person, who makes music like this… Arrive at Musimutra! We want to put you on the map and showcase your work. But for that we need you... to tell us a little about yourself and your music:
